Be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." — Hebrews 13:5

Being with other people, seeing a counselor, or talking on the phone won't make loneliness go away. The solution is friendship. We who are not alone can help in that situation. We must make friends with the lonely.

But hanging around for someone to become your friend won't help you get over your loneliness. The solution is provided in Hebrews 13:1-6, yet the issue is not addressed. Jesus Christ must be the center of our attention. He promises to be a supporter who won't abandon us (vv. 5–6).

Jesus is empathetic and attentive at all times. You can rely on him to support you in any circumstance.

Jesus is concerned. The Savior never leaves our side to bolster, console, assist, or direct us when the load of solitude would crush the soul and feelings of loneliness would engulf us.

Go out . . . and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind. — Luke 14:21

Similar to this, sometimes people's wilful opposition to God's demands of surrender needs to be broken down by the painful setbacks of life. The parable Jesus told in Luke 14 serves as a reminder that adversity can be a benefit if it prompts us to accept God's invitation. Only the impoverished and underprivileged, according to him, accepted the invitation to the banquet. The others were very independent and preoccupied.

Adversities are frequently required to help us determine what actually matters, whether our need is salvation or the growth of Christlike character. We pray that we will interpret them as God's tender invitation to join him at the "poor man's banquet."

By acknowledging our weakness, we make way for God's power. If we just believe, God will extend to us His immeasurable grace, but we won't be able to experience His love until we recognize our need.

Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. — 1 Corinthians 15:57

The Israelites were in need of a champion more than anyone. The taunts of the Philistine strongman Goliath kept their army at bay and humiliated them everyday as they camped in the Valley of Elah.

Jesse's young shepherd son David had brought food for his military brothers. He was enraged to hear Goliath making fun of the Israelites, so he requested permission to confront him. David had faith that the same God who had saved him from the lion and the bear in 1 Samuel 17:34–37 would also deliver him from the giant, and He did.

David's victory serves as a reminder of Jesus Christ's triumph. We required a defender because we were helplessly imprisoned by sin. God then dispatched His Son, Jesus, to rescue us. He underwent all of our human trials when He came to Earth as a man (Heb. 2:14–15), and He engaged in combat on our behalf. Jesus defeated sin and death entirely through His death and resurrection (1 Cor. 15:54–57). Furthermore, His victory gives us hope for success in our day-to-day walk with God.

However, we cannot count on success in our own power. We must rely on the strength and direction of the Holy Spirit. The triumph our Champion has brought us will therefore be more completely appreciated as we go in trust beside God.

By God's grace, we can overcome any giants we come up against. I shall extol the virtues of my beloved Redeemer and speak of how He triumphs over sin, death, and hell.

Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you. — 1 Samuel 15:23

God expected the king to entirely obey Him when He dispatched Saul to battle the Amalekites for what they had done to Israel (Ex. 17:8; 1 Sam. 15:2). When he didn't, Saul disappointed God as well as Israel. He also had to bear the consequences of his disobedience. God, Samuel informed him, "has rejected you from being king" (v. 23).

The Lord loves us and knows what is best for our lives since He is a wonderful Father. We must make every effort to follow what He has commanded in the Bible, His Word, in order to demonstrate our trust in Him. He deserves our whole submission.

The price of disobedience far outweighs the price of obedience. Let Me plan your days; Follow my instructions with obedience.
Do not pursue your own desires; instead attempt to follow Me.

He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel. — Psalm 103:7

Most Christians would rather witness God work amazing miracles than spend time with Him and discover His ways.

According to the passage for today, God revealed His marvelous deeds to the people of Israel, but He "made known His ways" to Moses. In the midst of a major dilemma, Moses fervently begged in Exodus 33, "If I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way." More than witnessing yet another great miracle, he yearned to understand God and His purposes for His people. So it seems sense that the Lord spoke to him "as a man speaks to his friend" (v. 11).

You will be content if your desire to know God intimately outweighs your desire to witness His powerful miracles.

Knowing God means becoming familiar with both His ways and His deeds. It used to be the blessing, but now it's the Lord; it used to be the emotion, but now it's His Word;
When I once desired His gift, it is now His to own; when I once sought healing, it is now His to possess.

God, be merciful to me a sinner! — Luke 18:13

That applies to salvation as well. One cannot be free from shame and condemnation until he is ready to say, "I am a sinner in need of salvation."

Ever used the phrase "I plead guilty"? If not, start right away. You will never be able to save yourself, so put your faith in the Lord Jesus and accept Him as your Savior. You will then experience the joy of forgiveness and freedom once you are freed from the guilt and influence of sin.

Fear comes from sin; liberation comes through confession. When we acknowledge our sin, admit our guilt, and put our faith in Christ's atonement, we will become internally pure.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. — Galatians 5:1

Some people spend their entire lives looking backwards. They long for the "good old days" when everything seemed to be going well. According to what they believe, families were stronger, Christians were nobler, and people were happier.

The Hebrews of antiquity were experts at exalting the repulsive past. They had been in a dire situation as Egyptian slaves! However, as soon as Moses freed them from servitude, they started romanticizing the "good old days." Many of them genuinely desired returning to Egypt so they might once more yoke their necks and endure Pharaoh's whipping. It should come as no surprise that God revoked their passports to the Promised Land.

To return to the "good old days" of the church, some Christians yearn. Which church, though? Ever since the time of Paul, believers have faced enormous challenges. Sexual immorality (1 Cor. 5:1), heresy (Gal. 1:6-7), and division (Acts 15:1-2) were all problems in the early church. The first century, the sixteenth century, and the twentieth century were not the church's "good old days."

Do not fall into the trap of looking back, unless it is to reflect on a lesson learned or to exalt God's accomplishments. The best is always yet to come for people whose lives are based on Christ.

Living in the past devalues the present and neglects the future. How frequently God grants success, and we celebrate the achievement, while a present opportunity slips past its bloom and becomes a seed.
