[Jesus] was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. — Matthew 14:14

When John the Baptist passed away, Jesus likewise felt the agony of loss, but it didn't stop Him from carrying out His mission. After only a little time alone (Matt. 14:13), He was moved by compassion to heal the sick and feed the 5,000 people.

Is your heart hurting right now? Is your life feeling empty? Do you have the want to give up? The Master's example offers encouragement. Accomplish whatever tasks are at hand. Set them apart for God. Don't indulge in self-pity. Take action to ease others' burdens. Keep in mind how Jesus handled His grief; He will give you the courage to do the same.

To relieve someone else's suffering is to forget one's own.
All that we pour into the lives of others comes back into our own; this is the destiny that unites us as brothers.

Whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. — Luke 9:24

How much more ought those of us who know Christ to be willing to do so for the truth if individuals were willing to lose everything for a cause founded on a lie? Jesus stated that in order to become one of His disciples, a person must be prepared to die for him. No of the expense, they were to make it a lifelong commitment.

Jesus challenges us to follow Him with a comparable level of resolve and bravery, ready to take any risk for His benefit.

We need to follow the Master's example even if we may not make it to the martyr's stake. Halfhearted! Should everybody who knows you, Master, hold it against you that you gave up your life while saving theirs?

Nay! We would give you the hearts we owe you, living only for your love and glorification.

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. — Psalm 139:14

Where can we go for assistance when we encounter challenges in life and are unable to get things to function properly? Doesn't it make logical that the One who created us is perfectly suited to provide the essential assistance we require? This fact gave the psalmist David a lot of comfort. "You formed my inner parts; You encased me in my mother's womb," he wrote. I will give You praise because You are a brilliant artist and I am fearfully and wonderfully fashioned. How priceless Your thoughts are to me as well, God! How impressive is the total of them? (Ps. 139:13-14,17).

As it was then, God's assistance is still available now. Who better to understand what we need than the One who created us?

You are covered by God's lifetime guarantee. All that I am, which You, Lord, have fashioned me into, I owe to You. I give thanks to You for creating me, and I am in awe of Your amazing works.

They shall still bear fruit in old age. — Psalm 92:14

That is how a believer's life should be in general. Our physical strength deteriorates as we age. The outer man dies, but the inner man should continue to grow until the day we die—mentally, emotionally, and most importantly, spiritually.

How lovely are individuals who age gracefully, display the beauty of Christ in their souls, and continue to be fruitful in the spiritual life! Such people continue to exhibit virtues that exalt God and advance the well-being and blessing of others.

We should continue to develop all the way to the end, just like that grand old pine!

The development of a saint takes a lifetime; the new birth just lasts a moment. Until I see You face to face, O Savior, help me to remain close to and protected by Your loving side, receiving grace upon grace each hour.

Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! —Psalm 34:9Perfect love casts out fear. — 1 John 4:18

I was terrified in the way that we ought to be afraid of God. This is the level of terror that is recommended by Psalm 34:9 and numerous other verses in the Bible. Our deep affection for the Lord and our gratitude for His love for us compel us to be afraid of disappointing Him.

An infantile dread is the fear of being punished. This is the fear that the "perfect love" in 1 John 4:18 casts out. Even still, this particular phobia isn't all that horrible. It frequently plays a role in leading someone to accept Christ, and it may also prevent a Christian from committing significant sin.

But as our faith deepens, we shall obey God out of a deep love for Him and a desire to avoid disappointing Him. Our main goal will be to please Him.

Lord, create in us a deep understanding of Your love and a heartfelt desire to please You. Deliver us from an immature dread of retribution.

To please God is the most important reason to obey Him. O may our love deepen as we draw nearer to God, making us fear His wrath more than we fear His rod.

When you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. — Matthew 6:5

Jesus didn't mean that it is improper to pray in public when He advised individuals to do it privately. He criticized fake prayers that were said to impress others. We may all occasionally feel that subliminal temptation.

We cannot expect to reach God's ear if we pray to appeal to man's ear.

Even while we should always be tuned into praying without ceasing, let's take extra particular care to watch what we say when we pray aloud.

Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you. — Psalm 55:22

It's important to off-load when we experience signs of overload, such as anger, stress, and lack of sleep. It's time to let go of some obligations and commitments. We might have to decline some requests. Above all, we must cast our anxieties on the Lord, as the psalmist said. He has pledged to support us in bearing our burdens. God urges us to bring all of our burdens to Him.

We have no justification for allowing even one worried thought after every concern and anxiety have been presented to God in confidence.

Beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of things he possesses. — Luke 12:15

One of those theological words that has become overused and no longer has a sharp edge is covetousness. It is not taken seriously by many. Some people even believe that when God created the Ten Commandments, He had nine good, strong ones already chosen, but added the one against coveting (Ex. 20:17) to round out the list.

In response to a man who interrupted Jesus in the middle of His discourse, He issued a warning regarding covetousness. The man asked Jesus to mediate a conflict he and his brother were having. Evidently, this son believed he was not receiving a fair share of the inheritance his deceased father had left for him.

For this man, the inheritance had turned into an obsession. It ate him up. He did not hear the emancipatory words the Savior had been uttering as he stood before Him and listened to His unequaled preaching.

Wanting more and more items or other people's property can be dangerous. This powerful urge was referred to as "idolatry" by the apostle Paul (Col. 3:5). That language is harsh. Let's have a look at the law. Listen to our Lord, please. He desires that we be generous toward God. Because of this, He issued the following admonition: "Beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses" (Luke 12:15).

Coveting something is incompatible with happiness. Help us, Lord, to look above and lean on Your limitless love when we start to crave more and more of this world's wealth—of material goods.

Pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers. — Matthew 9:38

The need for workers and the duty of sharing the gospel remain equally challenging. Since Jesus said, "The harvest is truly plentiful, but the laborers are few," nothing has altered in that regard. Therefore, ask the harvest's Lord to send out workers into His field (Matthew 9:37–38). 2,000 years ago, He Himself began the mission by dispatching 12 men to spread the good news.

Regarding missions, there is one thing we are powerless to change: our accountability.

Millions of people could be lost for all time in a dark, heathen place; who will go, the story of salvation?

disregarding the price while focusing on Jesus?

I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue. — Psalm 39:1

The Bible acknowledges that communication, a crucial aspect of our lives, requires close supervision. Paul advised, for instance, "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one" (Col. 4:6). James then issued a warning: "No man can bridle the mouth. It is a wild wicked, full of poison that kills (3:8).

We must control our tongues and make Psalm 19:14, which David wrote, our daily prayer: "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer."

Be mindful of your words, or feel free to speak whatever comes to mind. Take my lips and fill them with messages for Thee; take my voice and let me sing exclusively for My King at all times.

Whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. — Mark 8:35

The path to true fulfillment is via Christ. A life that genuinely satisfies is one that is lived entirely for the Lord.

Love for the Lord and others is a necessary component of a fulfilled existence.

If we devote ourselves to Christ and walk in His footsteps, He will offer us a fulfilling existence with daily meaning.

Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. — Psalm 63:7

I think David's relationship with God helped him arrive at this point. He prayed to the Lord, "My lips shall praise You," as he fled the army of his disobedient son in the wilderness (Ps. 63:3). But he also mentioned thinking about God, reveling in the shadow of His wings, and remembering Him (vv. 6–8). He was content to simply reflect on and savor His presence.

The same intimacy develops when our relationship with God deepens—sometimes via conversation, sometimes through meditation, sometimes through feelings of awe and appreciation. And even when we are engrossed in earthly activities, we experience a quiet inner freedom to communicate with Him or not because we know that He is constantly present.

Freedom and joy come from a deep relationship with God.

What comfort and joy we can have when Jesus joins us for dinner!

He brings the totality of His love and heavenly communion.

Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. — Job 13:15

God provides protection for Christians on occasion, but He also makes us vulnerable so that we would draw nearer to Him. Some Christians suddenly find themselves severely tested and in deep suffering after years of faithfulness—apparently for no apparent cause. They fight valiantly against their worries, doubts, and skepticism. Does God really give a damn how they suffer? He does, of course. But He has a specific reason for delaying release.

Job was defined as "blameless and upright," one who "holds fast to his integrity" when God spoke to Satan about him (Job 1:8; 2:3). God was confident that Job would rely on Him no matter what. Satan's claim that Job served God only because God had benefited him would be refuted by Job's steadfast faith in the face of insurmountable adversity.

In your trial, the Lord might be using a similar strategy. Keep Job's example in mind. Don't let go of God.

Our trials are meant to nudge us closer to God rather than to shatter us.

One fact shines through tests that are difficult to understand, despite the presence of hardships and fears: My God is right and kind. This reality cannot be faltered.

You have persevered and have patience . . . . Nevertheless I have this against you. — Revelation 2:3-4

Many people think of God as a strict disciplinarian who only offers threats and cautions. The picture painted in today's Scripture reading, however, is quite different. According to Revelation 2:4, the Ephesian church had drifted away from its original love and needed to rediscover the cozy glow it previously had in order to survive (v. 5). While sternly urging the Ephesians to turn from their sins, Jesus nevertheless acknowledged everything that was well in the church (vv. 2, 3, 6).

This is how God inspires us. He validates our allegiance to Christ and serves as a reminder of our potential. But He also highlights our shortcomings. We should be grateful that God praises and corrects us at the same time.

Our encouragement comes from God's praise, and our hope comes from God's correction.

How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? — John 4:9

As a disciple of Jesus, I am aware that I must respect everyone because they were made in the likeness of God. With the Samaritan woman, the Savior set an example of this accommodating disposition. When He spoke to her and requested a drink, she was taken aback. When they discovered Him conversing with her, even the disciples were astounded (John 4:27).

Go therefore and make disciples. — Matthew 28:19

We occasionally require a wake-up call. Jesus gave us all the instructions we require before He ascended into heaven, and we need to be reminded of this. We were instructed by him to go and create disciples. We must proceed immediately!

What you do today, not what you plan to do tomorrow, is what matters.

God, revive us! Does zeal wane?

Lord, renew us for the world is waiting!

Better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting. — Ecclesiastes 7:2

Ecclesiastes' preacher experienced death on a daily basis. He made the case that attending a funeral is preferable to attending a birthday celebration because when we consider death, we address the core difficulties in our lives.

Only those who have placed their faith in Jesus for eternal life are able to live properly because they are ready to die.

Before you are prepared to die, you cannot be prepared to live.

Considering mortality provides the right perspective on life;

The smartest course of action is to prepare for eternity.
