Death and life are in the power of the tongue. — Proverbs 18:21

Words of support can be "life words," giving us new inspiration for living. According to Mark Twain, he could survive for an entire month off of one nice compliment!

Christian support, however, goes beyond a thank you or a pat on the back, however essential they may be. It is "the kind of expression that helps someone want to be a better Christian, even when life is hard," according to one writer.

In order to know how to respond to people, Paul advised us to "season" our speech with "grace" (Col. 4:6). Then, we shall use "life words" that are motivating.

While criticism may shape us, praise will inspire us. A few words may seem tiny, yet when they are words of encouragement, what miracles they can work!

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. — Colossians 3:2

We who have placed our faith in Christ as Savior must live in this world, but we should not be attached to temporal possessions. To the point that we have no desire to sift through the muck of this ephemeral life, we must become so consumed with pleasing Him and striving for the crowns of eternal recompense.

Isn't it time that you and I reevaluate our priorities in light of Colossians 3:2?

Living above the World is the ideal way to live in it. As I continue to move forward and reach new heights, I continue to pray, "Lord, plant my feet on higher ground."

Whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he. — Proverbs 16:20

That accurately captures the sense of calm and contentment that Christians experience because to Jesus. It's a peace that results from understanding that God has already paid the price for our sins (Eph. 1:7). We are confident that we have been pre-selected and granted eternal life (vv. 4-5, 10–11). Our future is assured by the Holy Spirit who resides inside us (vv. 13–14). Furthermore, nothing can sever us from God's control (John 10:28). As His children, we can appeal to God for assistance when tough situations arise (Rom. 8:15–17).

What more do we require to be content internally?

Get to know Jesus if you want to be happy. We thank You, O God, for the joy and serenity You give us because we have put our faith in Your Son, who gave his life so that we can live.

There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. — Daniel 5:11

Babylon was experiencing a morally bleak night. Darker than the office, the classroom, or the neighborhood. By desecrating the holy goblets that had been stolen from the Jerusalem temple, King Belshazzar had blasphemed God with deliberate malice. Belshazzar and Babylon were now ready to experience God's wrath.

However, in the midst of this terrible gloom, the prophet Daniel's light flashed. Daniel was asked to decipher the mysterious message on the wall due to his reputation as a man who possessed "the Spirit of the Holy God" (Dan. 5:11).

Daniel might have tempered God's warning to make it more palatable to the king and his court. He might have left out the part about death and judgment. But Daniel stayed honest to God and refrained from distorting the message in order to appease the king. He spoke courageously and honestly while addressing Belshazzar and his inebriated court while standing alone.

Daniel's decision to do that required a great deal of fortitude, but the threat posed by an earthly ruler paled in comparison to his allegiance to the ruler of heaven. Because he feared God so greatly, Daniel had little fear of Belshazzar.

When we adopt Daniel's heavenly viewpoint, we discover that God gives us the strength to stand out as well.

Our courage to uphold our conviction grows as it becomes stronger. We blend in with the throng in search of strength, only to discover that it is becoming increasingly elusive.
With no more courage, we pray to the Lord, who gives us new strength to carry out His purpose.

The root of the righteous cannot be moved. — Proverbs 12:3

Godly people are frequently compared to trees in the Bible (Ps. 1:3; Prov. 12:3). Growing trees not only have branches that reach higher, but their roots also get deeper. A sturdy tree cannot develop tall branches without having a strong foundation. In the wind, it would grow top-heavy and fall over.  "Christians are no different. Without immersing our life in His instructions and entangling our roots around His Word, it is impossible for us to grow in the Lord.

Wouldn't it be cool to be a big, unmovable tree? That can only be attained via a life of consistent Bible study, self-control, and tried faith—conditions that foster deep roots.

Being rooted in God's Word provides the foundation for stability. We study the Bible to ingrain its truth in our hearts, and when we put it into practice, its truth will remain with us.

Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? — Proverbs 6:27

The risk of playing with sin—some "small" thing that seems to only give pleasure without hurting anyone—is something that this caution relates to much more. A minor sin can turn into a horrible tragedy that "brings forth death" (Jas. 1:15) if it is fed, allowed to grow, and taken pride in. This truth was used in the context of sexual purity by the Proverbs author. Don't be seduced by her attractiveness, Solomon advised (6:25).

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are obligated to put an immediate stop to any evil that arises in our hearts by admitting it to the Lord and requesting His assistance in overcoming it. Playing with a pet sin is similar to playing with a dangerous animal. It will eventually turn against us.

The most lethal sins sneak up on us rather than charging at us. We cannot afford to experiment with fire or provoke a snake's bite; we cannot afford to believe that immorality offers any genuine pleasure.

My steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. — Psalm 73:2-3

Psalmist Asaph came dangerously close to falling spiritually (Ps. 73:2). He observed wicked people prospering, obtaining their wishes, and passing away painlessly (vv. 3–12), yet while leading an upright life, he was "chastened every morning" (vv. 13–14). He was so envious that he almost believed it was pointless to live a heavenly life.

However, when his attention was on God, he understood that the wicked are on shaky ground and are approaching judgment (vv. 17–20). He admitted his folly and understood that God supports and rewards those who put their trust in Him (vv. 21–24).

Put your hand in the hand of God. It's your best defense against tripping in the treacherous terrain of life.

If you place your hand in God's, He will save you from falling. If you find yourself in a precarious situation, stay by Jesus' side and make sure He has your hand in his. He will be your dependable leader.

O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You. — Psalm 63:1

Some people publicly express their desire to not enter paradise. People have said to me that they would rather spend eternity with their drinking companions in hell than with the rest of the religious folk.

When asked why they believe they will be happy in heaven, the majority of individuals reply because they hope to go there when they die. They disregard Jesus Christ and have no interest in God. They have little interest in praying, attending church, or reading the Bible. Why would they enjoy God's fellowship on the other side all of a sudden?

There is no denying David's intense longing for God, even if he makes no mention of it in Psalm 63. And I think that the godly attitudes and behaviors we cultivate in our life right now prepare us for the pleasures of heaven for all of eternity.

That brings up some difficult issues. We claim to want God in our life, but do we really want to spend time with Him? How much time do we devote to prayer, reading His Word, and engaging in worship? How fervently do we desire His approval? Does our heart yearn for Him and does our soul thirst for Him? Then, like David, we can affirm, "My soul follows closely behind You" (v. 8).

It's time to make an investment in eternity. Trying to show Jesus our love and yearning to come to know Him more are the best ways to prepare for our upcoming meeting in heaven.

Whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son. — Romans 8:29

Even when we are receiving correction from God for our sin, this holds true for all of our hardships. According to the author of Hebrews, "No chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterwards it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it" (Heb. 12:11).

Does it seem as though life is working against you in every way? Take courage as you confront disappointment! All things are working together for your benefit if you are a child of God, and He is transforming you "into the likeness of His Son" (Rom. 8:28–29). Trials can teach you valuable lessons from God that will shape you.

We might need to be broken by God before He can make us. I do express thanks for all the heartbreaks and tears, for the dark days and useless years because I now realize that these experiences were what enabled me to mature.

What injustice have your fathers found in Me, that they have gone far from Me? — Jeremiah 2:5

New love is thrilling! All of us have witnessed it in newlywed couples. Whether they are 20 or 70 years old, love makes their faces lovely and their feet leap.

It applies to more than just marriages. We've witnessed individuals carefully wash and wax a brand-new sports car before repeating the process.

We initially react with unwavering loyalty, whether it's to a new car or a new romantic connection. But excitement frequently wanes as time goes on. Unrealistic hopes might make us oblivious to a person or thing's shortcomings. We set ourselves up for disappointment when we place excessive expectations on another person or a material object.

It's possible that a marriage, a house, or a car won't be perfect. But if our relationship with God becomes distant, it's because we've stopped communicating with him and he's lost our interest. The intimacy is lost at that point. (Jer. 2:5-8) It occurred to Israel, and it happens to us. God, however, is not to blame. He does not alter. His love for us never wavers.

Take some time to reflect on who the Lord is and what He has accomplished if your connection with Him has grown distant. Prayfully approach God closer. You won't be left wondering where your love went if you do this.

Review Christ's love for you in order to refresh your devotion to him. Tell me, please, what is impeding thy first love.
Can you not remember the day when you gave your heart, your life, and everything to Christ?

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. — 2 Corinthians 5:17
