I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. — 3 John 4.

We must teach our children about Jesus as well as serve as examples of how to live a Christian life. That was the case with John, who rejoiced over those he named his children (3 Jn. 4), and Paul, who regarded Timothy as his son in the Spirit (1 Tim. 1:18).

Let's emulate them by acting, speaking, and loving in a manner that draws everyone—especially our kids—to Jesus.

A good example is the best present a parent can give their children. Every deed and word has an influence, just as a kind remark or a beautiful prayer; whatever you put on a child's heart is indelible there.

By the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain. — 1 Corinthians 15:10

People are better equipped to accept themselves as they are and achieve more in life when they have a good understanding of their own strengths and flaws. The individual who said, "I'm only someone, but I am someone," can be related to by them. I can accomplish something, yet I can't do everything.

The apostle Paul was aware of his shortcomings, yet he took the resources that God had given him and put them to good use. His sense of self-worth was founded on God's acceptance of him through Christ. Despite carrying the terrible memory of having persecuted the church, God's love allowed him to maintain his apostleship (1 Cor. 15:9; 1 Tim. 1:13–15).

Paul didn't have a negative self-perception when he referred to himself as the "least of the apostles," and he wasn't moved to state in 1 Corinthians 15:9 that he was "not worthy to be called an apostle" by a false humility. When he said that he "labored more abundantly" than all of the other apostles (v.10), it wasn't out of excessive pride either. He was only emphasizing the effectiveness of God's grace while acknowledging his own human frailties. He was aware that his forgiveness enabled him to serve God.

We shall be able to say, "By the grace of God I am what I am," if we put our faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord and are sincere with ourselves. That demonstrates mature self-acceptance.

Our value is found in what Christ has done for us, not in what we accomplish for God. We all have distinct imperfections that make us feel guilty about ourselves, yet God accepts us just as we are, so we must do the same.

The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. — Job 1:21

Some of the pastors who led churches there gathered in the spring of 1993 to discuss their feelings and experiences. They all concurred that after experiencing the hurricane's horrific strength, everyone realized just how defenseless and exposed humans actually are. Despite our pride in our technological advancements, there are occasions when we must humbly acknowledge that "we are not in charge." The phrase "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord" (Job 1:21) was uttered by a few of the people whose faith was put to the test.

Is your faith in God so strong that you will humbly rely on His knowledge, goodness, and mercy no matter what happens? You will be able to face challenges without giving up if you put your trust in God.

God does not offer safety from life's storms, but rather safety during them. My times are in Your hands; why should I be afraid or in doubt?
Never will My Father's hand make His child shed an unnecessary tear.

[God] comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble. — 2 Corinthians 1:4

People who have recently experienced a loss are not in the right frame of mind for intellectual activities. They require the solace that can only come from God. For us to be able to comfort others with the same comfort that God provides for us, we must first feel God's consolation (2 Corinthians 1:4). Only then can we be His channels of blessing.

By offering up prayers for the grieving, demonstrating our concern, performing little acts of kindness, and speaking as He directs, we can serve as His agents. But let's never lose sight of the fact that He provides the necessary comfort in whatever we accomplish.

Thank You, Lord, for giving us solace while we were in need. Use us to cheer up those who are grieving.

God doesn't give us comfort to make us feel good; rather, he makes us into comforters.

A life that is shattered by grief
can empathize with another person's suffering and give out the lovely fragrance of love that will ease their heart.

How quickly and frequently we may quote Romans 8:28 from the Bible! But perhaps we need to understand this verse's meaning in its entirety.

Let's look past our current situation and keep in mind that God has a higher beneficial intention.

Remember that God is good even when things appear to be horrible. God has a plan for our suffering, and the Savior is always aware of what is best. Through every pain, test, and difficulty, we learn so many priceless truths.

Other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased, and produced. — Mark 4:8

The sower and the soils parable in Mark 4 illustrates the significance of how we react to God's word. It teaches us that the condition of the soil, rather than the farmer's expertise or the seed's potency, determines whether a crop will succeed or fail.

Some listeners are like fertile ground; the message sinks deeply into their souls. Other audiences merely bounce the seed off of them since they resemble the parking lot of a church. Others, though, stifle potential growth like a weed patch.

Not all sermons are "the fine art of talking in someone else's sleep." Similar to how ill people require medicine or how crops require rain, we must "drink in" the lessons of the Bible. Jesus warned, "Take heed what you hear" (v. 24) because of this. It is largely up to you whether or not you find value in a sermon.

The seed establishes itself in healthy soil and will soon produce fruit. If God's Word is fostered in our hearts, it will grow and bear fruit, just as a seed placed in rich soil has life and will take root.

The trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. — 1 Corinthians 15:52

Franklin's epitaph is a beautiful reaffirmation of Paul's claim in Philippians 3:20–21 that the risen Lord will change our mortal bodies such that they resemble His magnificent body.

What solace this fact provides when someone we care about passes away in the Lord! What a solace it is for us as we approach death minute by moment! However, this solace is only ours if we accept the good news of Christ's victorious death on the cross and the empty tomb that followed it.

What Calvary secures is guaranteed by the resurrection. We now soar in the direction that Christ has lead us, following our exalted Head. Made to be like Him, we rise, taking to ourselves the cross, the grave, and the skies.

You have not passed this way before. — Joshua 3:4

Sometimes, as we gaze ahead, we too can become anxious since we've "never been there before." But the Lord will take care of us just as He did for Joshua and Israel (Josh. 3).

You might be worrying right now about a brand-new, untested path that the Lord is guiding you down. Then pay attention to what God says in His Word and have faith that "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Heb. 13:5). According to Psalm 32:8, "I will teach you and instruct you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye."

Put your hand in the hand of your heavenly Father and follow His guidance with faith.

We are not asked by God to follow other people's directions. You have my word that I will be with you wherever you go and that I will never, ever leave you while you walk through this world below.

I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have given me life. — Psalm 119:93

Christian ideals are no longer taught in many Western school systems, and neither is Bible reading. But in Eastern Europe, things are different.

The first step in bringing the Bible back into our classrooms and society is bringing it back into each of our own lives. We must read it frequently, accept what it says, and obediently follow its instructions. The psalmist prayed, "I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have given me life" (119:93). May this be our prayer as well.

Ignoring the Bible is a recipe for disaster. Give us a great desire to read Your Word every day, Lord; assist us in keeping it hidden in our hearts so that we don't wander from its truth.

As long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord. — 1 Samuel 1:28

Hannah meant business when she gave Samuel to God. Not only did she leave him at the temple after dedicating him, she also left him there. Eli was given custody of him by her so that he might grow up serving God.

Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways!” — Haggai 1:7

Evil is spreadable, much like a disease. Evil tends to spread throughout a group, just as one person coughing in an airplane cabin can infect every passenger.

On the other side, holiness needs to be actively sought after. We don't become holy by hanging out with devout folks in a segregated setting. Holiness results from confidence in and submission to the Lord.

Haggai made that point many years ago. He talked about the meat that had been designated for God's sacrifice. The other meal could not become holy if that meat came into contact with it (2:12). On the other hand, a little touch could quickly spread ceremonial uncleanness (v.13).

The Israelites believed themselves to be holy because of their godly lineage, but Haggai informed them that they had actually become filthy as a result of their disobedience (v. 14).

You must first surrender yourself to God in faith if you wish to be holy. Then you must discover what God commands and submit to Him in the power of God. It may be beneficial to have religious parents and friends, but these things cannot make you holy.

Only through a strong relationship with the Lord and following His instructions can we become holy.

Holiness is a way of life that should be desired, not a virus that may be caught. Help me to be fearful of disobedient behavior, Lord, and may I seek what pleases You and brings You the highest praise.

There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus. — 1 Timothy 2:5

We can be thankful for the following realities because we understand the truth, strength, and joy of the gospel of Jesus Christ: (1) There is no need for any additional sacrifice because Jesus sacrificed Himself as the ideal, sufficient sacrifice for our sin (Heb. 10:10). (2) Jesus, who serves as our mediator (1 Timothy 2:5), ensures that we have direct access to God, therefore there is no need for any other intermediary between God and us. (3) Since Jesus is "the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6), there is no need for us to struggle on our own to reach God.

Christ's atonement, not our attainment, is what brings about salvation. Christ's sacrifice on the cross is all that is required to atone for our sins; He is the way, the truth, and the life.

I saw that wisdom excels folly as light excels darkness. — Ecclesiastes 2:13

Similar zeal for life can be found in some of the most enjoyable people. They are the life of the party thanks to their enjoyment of a good practical joke and a good laugh. But like the jackdaw, these upbeat people occasionally lack discernment. By acting foolishly and not being considerate of other people's feelings, they can "start fires" of annoyance in their own homes.

Let's take a cue from the rambunctious jackdaw and Ecclesiastes (2:13) author. Fun and games have their place, but a joke that makes fun of someone else is never humorous. Be careful to distinguish between innocently silly behavior and invigorating enjoyment.

A smart man's head prevents him from straying too far, like a pin. It's beneficial to smile, laugh, and play because happy hearts chase away the clouds; but, foolish behavior and careless enjoyment have the potential to bring sin and block out the sun.

When Christ-followers mirror God's kindness by acting in Samaritan kindness toward others rather than just talking about it, they can deliver stirring sermons to the world.

Who are we? We live the Good Samaritan narrative each time we encounter someone in need. Do we invest the time and effort to participate? Perhaps we might help a neighbor who is in need of material aid or offer a sympathetic ear to someone who is struggling. Maybe the person the Lord puts into our life today can hear the gospel from us. Or will we behave similarly to the religious leaders who rapidly crossed over to the other side without offering assistance?

Let's serve our Lord by meeting other people's needs in the same way He would.

Israel may have thought the challenges they faced were insurmountable as they considered taking the country God had promised them. However, He did not ask them to complete everything all at once.

A winning tactic is to advance "little by little".

Keep digging, but trust God to move your mountain. He doesn't guide me day by day or even year by year; rather, My Lord shows me the route as I proceed step by step.

We will [tell] to the generation to come the praises of the Lord. — Psalm 78:4

Even though their labor occasionally must, the legacy of Christian workers never stops.

The Bible tells us that the stories of God and His people are to be passed down to the following generation. For instance, the people of Judah were instructed to tell their children a tale about locusts in Joel 1. The narrative was a significant part of the people's tradition and had to be passed along since it had prophetic implications. The theme is similar in Psalm 78, which is our reading for today. The history of God's actions in Israel's past was to be told to the younger Israelites by the older ones.

We have the chance to live a life of devoted service to God today and the gospel of redemption through Jesus. Your influence endures if you have shared the message with the following generation. Even when you finish your work, it continues. Your impact will endure forever.

Sharing what Christ has accomplished for us leaves a trail for others who choose to follow. I enjoy telling this tale since it has meant so much to me; for this reason, I am telling it to you right now.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house . . . nor anything that is your neighbor’s. — Exodus 20:17

The root of coveting is conflating our wants and necessities, which is why we frequently feel the need to get more and more. We fail to realize that knowing God brings greater fulfillment in life than amassing material possessions.

The tenth commandment may seem like an afterthought in comparison to such major offenses as murder, theft, lying, and adultery, but it is the cornerstone of all the other commandments and guarantees happiness. It is the sole directive that focuses on an attitude rather than an action that is outlawed. However, it serves as a deterrent to the temptation to transgress the other nine commandments.

David committed adultery, theft, and murder as a result of his covetous desire for another man's wife (2 Samuel 11). And the need for ever-increasing pleasure, power, or wealth can ruin familial ties and lead to deception of others. Additionally, covetousness prevents us from developing and keeping a proper connection with God because it is idolatry (Col. 3:5).

Help us, Lord, to find satisfaction in You.

Not getting all you want prevents you from being content. Help us, God, to look above and lean on Your unrivaled love when we start to crave more and more of the money and possessions of this world.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. — Exodus 20:16

How easily we can tell lies! We skew the facts with a little hyperbole here, omission of information there, or deceitful silence. The superstructure and cornerstone of all relationships, however, is truth. Society implodes if the truth's pillars are removed. Because of how obvious this moral principle is, even thieves punish their own when they lie to them.

The ninth commandment bans lying to our neighbor on purpose and emphasizes the holiness of telling the truth in all of our transactions. Exodus 20:16 and Deuteronomy 5:20 both translate the Hebrew word for "false" as "untrue" and "insincere." Therefore, any act of insincerity or dishonesty constitutes giving false testimony against a neighbor.

Additionally, this commandment reveals two hidden motivations that God detests: malice and pride. When we lie, it's typically to discredit someone or to make oneself look good. The first comes from jealousy, while the second from arrogance.

According to Jesus, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). We shall become more truthful with ourselves and others as we become nearer to God. "Are we followers of Him who is the truth?" is the inquiry.

Stretching the truth weakens it more than anything else. Lord, purify my heart from all lies and teach me the truth. Also, help me to be honest in everything I say and do.

You shall not steal. — Exodus 20:15

If everyone behaved honestly in that way, society would undergo a revolution. Theft by employees of commodities and time would end. Shoplifting would become outdated. We would stop overcharging for goods and services. Prices might be reduced. Additionally, we would all receive more of what is due to us.

That kind of society is what God desires, as evidenced by the eighth commandment. It is founded on the idea that everything belongs to God and that stealing from the Lord entails defrauding organizations or individuals. Additionally, it defends everyone's right to hold property in the only way that God permits—using it wisely to manage what is His for the benefit of others rather than accumulating more and more for oneself.

We can avoid committing theft if we have a genuine relationship with Christ. He will teach us how to give rather than take as our friendship develops.

Christians owe their money; they do not own it. As all that someone else has comes from the Lord's hand and is theirs by His own word, taking what is rightfully theirs is stealing from the Lord.

You shall not commit adultery. —Exodus 20:14 Flee sexual immorality. — 1 Corinthians 6:18

The Bible is current in regards to sexual issues. God forewarned against fornication and adultery long ago. He effectively commanded, "Say no!" With the terrible threat of AIDS in the twenty first century, many politicians, teachers, and medical professionals are now siding with God.

Up until marriage, abstinence is a solid safety net. It safeguards the gift of sexual intimacy, which is meant to be cherished within a committed and long-lasting partnership. Because He has the best good of both men and women in mind, God detests sexual immorality.

The purpose of God's commands is to complete us, not to disappoint us. Lord, give me courage every day—look how easily I can slip!
Be Thou, my God, a barrier between right and wrong; the passions of my body are strong.

You shall not murder. — Exodus 20:13

The sixth commandment, which forbids the willful taking of human life, was believed by the Jews to be a reference to murder. It does not prohibit governments from carrying out war or applying the death penalty. This commandment only addresses personal morals.

The divine truth that human life is sacred and that we must defend and preserve it is the foundation of Exodus 20:13. Every person carries the imprint of God. Even at the time of conception, an embryo is identified as being unique. Only God has the authority to take life, which is His most priceless gift. All three of these practices—abortion, euthanasia, and physician-assisted suicide—must be weighed against God's claim to our lives.

When He indicated that being enraged at someone without justification qualifies as murder (Mt. 5:21–22), Jesus brought the sixth commandment to everyone's doorstep. According to John, "Whoever hates his brother is a murderer" (1 John 3:15). We are all now murderers in utter need of God's mercy and forgiveness.

Lord, I thank You for Your kindness and mercy. By Your Holy Spirit, grant us the ability to love others as You have loved us and to do so by valuing, defending, and enhancing life as a gift from You.

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land. — Exodus 20:12

The fifth commandment states that God places a strong importance on family bonds throughout life. On the surface, it appears to be aimed solely at kids, but parents must set an example. Children learn to appreciate, respect, and follow their parents when they witness their love and respect for one another, feel their love and respect for them, and see their obedience to God. This precept to kids actually affects everyone.

How many of us have shown our parents the respect they deserve? And who of us as parents has been the best role model for our kids? Although we have breached this commandment, Jesus' death on the cross has taken away our guilt. He gives us the confidence to beg our parents and kids for forgiveness. Additionally, if they are deceased, we can demonstrate the sincerity of our repentance by fostering our other familial ties.

When we honor our parents, we honor our Father as well.

We learn to respect our parents by watching them. Children who respect their parents are acting in a way that pleases God; parents who are loving but firm are guiding their children in the correct path.

The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. — Mark 2:27

God's demand to work is a crucial component of the fourth commandment (Ex. 20:9), a point that is sometimes overlooked. Legitimate labour, when done in harmony with sufficient rest, honors God and has eternal meaning (Eph. 6:5-8). The fundamental reality of this commandment is that.

But keeping a day of rest has greater spiritual importance. We need a regular period of reflection on our relationship with God—a rest not only for bodily restoration but also for spiritual regeneration—even if we must avoid all legalistic attitudes and behaviors towards it (Rom. 14:5–6). We must reflect on what Christ accomplished for us on the cross and enjoy the peace that results from fully putting our faith in His finished work (Heb.

Do we need to reexamine this ancient mandate regarding God's day of rest?

The remainder of the week has importance because of our rest day. We will continually be regenerated if we make time for enjoyment and play, rest along life's bustling path, and when we stop to kneel and pray.

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. — Exodus 20:7

Israel took the third commandment so seriously that scribes used to wait to write the name Yahweh (Jehovah) until after they had taken a bath and changed into new garments. After finishing it, they would take another bath and change back into their old clothing.

When God's name is invoked to support a promise, the commandment also deals with breaching that commitment. But even when God is not mentioned, every commitment we make to someone else is made in His presence and is therefore just as enforceable as if we had prayed in His name.

How all of us are damned by the third commandment! But praise God for the Savior-sounding name Jesus. He offers us the forgiveness and support required to uphold the third commandment and develop into men and women who are renowned for keeping their word.

If you love God, treat His name with respect.

• In what way am I in violation of this order?

You shall not make for yourself a carved image. — Exodus 20:4

Any representation of a deity in art poses a risk. No created item can fully and accurately represent God. God gave Israel the prohibition against creating any representations of celestial or terrestrial objects to serve as objects of worship. Such representations desecrate God by distorting His grandeur, which might encourage sin.

Worshipping an idolized representation of one of the three persons of the Trinity obscures God's splendor. It misdirects us. According to John 4:24, "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

While God created us in His image, we are unable to create Him in ours.
All of Thy angels adore Thee, O Great Father of Glory, O Pure Father of Light; All praise we would render—O help us to behold. You are merely hidden by the beauty of the light!

You shall have no other gods before Me. — Exodus 20:3

This would not occur if one kept the first commandment. However, man forgets the true God in his endeavors to create gods out of money, material goods, pleasure, knowledge, and other people. But nothing that was made can ever take the place that God intended for Himself in our hearts.

When we accept Jesus as our personal Savior, our worship of God becomes more concentrated since He is God in the flesh (Jn. 1:14). However, why does God demand that we only love and adore Him? We get eternal life from Him (Col. 1:13–18), in Him we live, move, and have our being (Acts 17:28). He has the right to declare, "No other gods!" as only He is the live, genuine God who both created and atoned for us.

Only the infinitely powerful God can fill a person's heart. For Additional Research and Reflection

Irian Jaya, Tokyo, Tibet, and other remote locales are not the only places where the darkness of disbelief can be found. Unbelief also casts a shadow over the streets of Toronto, New York, Miami, St. Louis, and other cities. Wherever we are, when we witness alongside godly life, it is most effective. May we shine brightly in the dark, guiding them to the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the source of our light.
