Sorrow is better than laughter, for by a sad countenance the heart is made better. — Ecclesiastes 7:3

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is used to lessen the discomfort of surgery. Its effects are typically pleasant due to the insensitivity to physical pain it causes. It has been observed that patients who are under its influence sing and laugh hysterically before passing out.

The guileful heart of a person can also numb him to the ravages of sin, giving him the illusion of health. His laughter simply reflects a momentary escape from tragedy, although giving off the sense of power and elation.

As the crackling of thorns in a fire is a sign of their destruction, so the gaiety of the sinner's conduct reveals his shallowness and the certainty of his death, according to the author of Ecclesiastes (7:1-6), who portrayed such a scenario.

He is ignorant of both the sanctity of life and the certainty of God's judgement for his transgression.

Have you avoided acknowledging your sin to God and wasted your time by focusing on the here and now? If so, you must confess your helpless, sinful state and go to the "house of mourning" (vv. 2, 4). Put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved forever. Then you can transform your silly laughter into genuine delight.

Sadness teaches us more than laughing does. The wail of sadness is preferable.

from grieving repentant people

then the laughter and joy

of the unbelief of damned sinners.

Most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest on me. — 2 Corinthians 12:9

An realisation of our own vulnerability would have to be something we love to loathe more than the haughtiness of others. We hate it so much that we find excuses for our own shortcomings.

Even the apostle Paul required a reminder of his own vulnerability. He was repeatedly wounded by a "thorn in the flesh" (2 Corinthians 12:7). Three times he pleaded with the Lord to take it away, but his prayer was denied. Instead, he tapped into God's abundant grace by means of his thorn.

According to the Lord's assurance in v. 9, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness" (v. 9).

We can be powerful weak persons in Christ as long as we acknowledge our weaknesses.

To understand God's power, we must first understand our own.  May God's Word be firmly established.

Hour after hour, in my heart

So that everyone can see that I win

only by means of His might.

Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. — James 1:2-3

Formulas in mathematics function well with numbers but not with people. This is why the equation in James 1 seems impossible to apply:

Trials + Faith = Patience

Try combining oil and water first. Confidence in God's unchanging love, however, is what makes this recipe effective because it permits all human emotions that are associated with life's challenges.

So if you add faith and realise that God's love never fails, you can "count it all joy" when you go through hardships. As you proceed, you will cultivate a mindset of patient expectation and confidence in God's goodness.

Recognising the joy in our hardships is the first step in developing patience. I could be put to the test through afflictions,
They cannot annihilate;
Just a peek of your love
brings joy to all of them.

He who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. — Jeremiah 23:28

To the Corinthian believers, the apostle Paul pronounced, "Woe is me if I do not proclaim the gospel!" (1 Cor. 9:16). Today's preachers frequently lack Paul's zeal for speaking the truth. They appear to be more concerned about steering clear of potentially offending truths or remarks. Instead of facing evil with courage and love, they compromise and distort the words of the Bible in an effort to live up to the world's shifting expectations.

Those who twist God's words are warned. He expressed His disapproval to the religious authorities who "cause My people to err by their lies and by their recklessness" (Jer. 23:32) through the prophet Jeremiah. As opposed to that, God commanded the prophets to "Speak My word faithfully" (v. 28).

We need to pray more than ever that men of God will boldly proclaim His Word.

You must understand Him who is the Truth in order to declare the Truth. Some "men of God" twist the Scripture.

By their actions and words,

But when obedient ones receive blessing

Declare what is true and right.

The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance [of God]. — Psalm 58:10

What should a believer think about the punishment of the wicked? Should we celebrate when nasty people are made to pay for their wrongdoing?

We find some assistance in Psalm 58, where David implores God to exact vengeance on those who fought him and were evil. He pleaded, "Break their teeth in their mouth," in verse 6. "Let them act as. ..(V.8) "a stillborn child. That's a lot of pressure!

But one important point needs to be made here. The incorrigibly wicked, who, "like the deaf cobra," refused all attempts to persuade them from their folly, were the object of David's prayer that God's judgement would be carried out against them (vv. 3–5).

God is a just and fair God. When mass killers, child molesters, and those who deceive the innocent are made to pay for their crimes, His holiness is confirmed.

Let us be glad that God will not put up with evil. But let us also be glad in God's mercy. God's justice is satisfied and we are pardoned via the sacrifice of His Son.

"Vengeance is mine, I will repay," declares the Lord. Rom. 12:19

Evil now thrives, deception rules,

And darkness makes the light weaker;

However, we are glad that Christ is alive.

will eventually put everything right.

Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. — Romans 12:15

We've all had to endure listening to those who seem to take great pleasure in detailing their difficulties to others. While we may feel bad for them, we also feel bad about having to endure their seemingly never-ending litany of medical ailments.

However, we must pray to the Lord for sufficient Christian love to be sincerely concerned about the concerns of others. Friends who will be good listeners and "weep with those who weep" (Rom. 12:15) are desperately needed in this chaotic society. What consolation and inspiration we may give simply being prepared to listen to someone who is struggling! This has the potential to truly serve Christ.

The Lord Jesus practised healing.

We are able to have a hearing ministry with the aid of the Holy Spirit and a kind and forgiving heart!

We ought to care more in a world that could care less. Give me a kind and empathetic heart.

Jesus resembles Thee, Jesus resembles Thee;

I'm moved by the needs erupting all around me.

filled with infinite compassion.

I and My Father are one. — John 10:30

A prominent figure in the early church, Augustine (354–430), is credited with reflecting on the Trinity one day while strolling along the ocean's edge.

The Trinity cannot be thoroughly dissected under the lens of human mind or within the confines of logic. But that doesn't prove that theologians came up with the concept. It is merely articulating what the Bible teaches (Jn. 10:29–30; Acts 5:3–4) to say that the one and only God has revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—three distinct but not separate individuals.

It only seems to reason that the One we adore and to whom we dedicate our life must be much greater than our finite understanding of Him.

The mind is stunned by the reality of a triune God, but the heart is satisfied by knowing Him.
Holy Spirit, Son, and Father,
Blessed Trinity, thou art
Essentially, there are three people—
You are God, and we reverence you.

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways. — Isaiah 55:9

Life can undoubtedly appear pointless if one does not have confidence in God and understanding of His plan as described in the Scripture. In the words of Shakespeare's MacBeth, it is "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

But life starts to make sense when we look at history and our personal experiences from a biblical viewpoint. As the Grand Architect reveals His intent, both in the creation of the natural world and in the building of His church (Eph. 1:3–3:19), a divine blueprint becomes clear.

We see a glimpse of God's wise, loving, and powerful redemptive plan when we follow Christ and study His Word. Although we may not fully comprehend everything, we may be confident that everything fits perfectly into His everlasting purpose.

Even at its worst, God can work for the best results in heaven. We don't understand Him.
But heaven and earth tell.
God is seated in a position of supremacy.
and efficiently rules everything.

You He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins. — Ephesians 2:1

The dramatic account of what occurred when Jesus came upon a sizable funeral procession is found in Luke 7. A widow was travelling to the cemetery to lay to rest her one and only son. Jesus spoke to the widow, touched the coffin, and with a command brought her son back to life. He did all of this out of compassion.

That young man's experience serves as an example of what occurs to someone who is converted to Christ. We are "dead in trespasses and sins" (Eph. 2:1) and headed towards what the Bible refers to as the second death (Rev. 20:6) until we come into contact with the Saviour. Unless we experience a spiritual rebirth, we will be estranged from God's love forever.

However, when the desperate sinner hears from Jesus through the persuading work of the Holy Spirit and places his faith in Him, he immediately gains new life. Then come joy, happiness, and blessing.

Have you heard Jesus' teachings of eternal life, friend? Only He can offer you a joyful awakening that gives forgiveness and joy right now as well as the hope of eternal life in heaven. He alone can remove the deadness from your soul.

Ask Jesus to use you to teach people about the One who grants new life if He has saved you from eternal death.

When you put your faith in God's Son, light replaces the darkness. When I was dead in sin and far from God, I couldn't see any light in my heart.

But I discovered the light in God's Word, and now Christ lives in me.

Ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it. — Jeremiah 6:16

However, I do want for a return to the "old paths, where the good way is" (Jer. 6:16). There was a time when compassion, chastity, loyalty, respect for authority, and obedience to the law were taught to kids. The concept that we are moral beings who ought to practise self-control and seek the welfare of others was mirrored in back then's newspaper and magazine articles.

The notion that we can only be happy when we have the freedom to pursue our every selfish wish has largely superseded this one in modern society. Rejecting established paths is nothing new. People were not ashamed of their misdeeds in Jeremiah's time (v. 15). In response to the prophet's pleas for them to go back to the "good way," they said, "We will not walk in it" (v. 16).

But we don't need to give up. Still, God is in charge. By praying for them and loving them, we may lead by example. Many revivals where large numbers of people followed the ancient routes are documented in history. It may occur once more!

Our goal here on earth is to walk in the light, not to become accustomed to the dark.

O Christ, my Lord, send a revival

Send it in accordance with Your Sacred Word, and let it start in me. Let it travel over land and water.

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. — 1 Peter 4:10

There was a lot of talk in the 1960s and 1970s about people's freedom to "do their own thing." Being oneself, getting to know oneself, and expressing oneself were encouraged.

A Christian should never strive for unhealthy individualism that rejects God and exalts the self, of course. However, He may use our unique talents and spiritual gifts for His glory when we are aware of our obligations to others and our reliance on the Lord.

Christians are reminded in Romans 12 that although they are all members of one body, they each possess unique talents that God has given them. Every child of God has a responsibility to acknowledge his unique gifts and put them to use in serving Him.

The roles of the pilot, co-pilot, mechanics, engineers, and flight attendants varies in commercial aeroplanes. What danger would arise for the passengers if each crew member abandoned his responsibilities for another position? In a similar vein, if a church's members push for the viewpoint of another, it could suffer major consequences.

Don't compromise God's best by lusting after a job you might not be qualified for. Take advantage of the gift that God has given you and "do your own thing." Do it well, too!

You can serve God the most effectively where you are. What other people do is irrelevant; my job is to observe.

My life is built on the blueprint that the Lord has for me.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. — Psalm 37:23

The Lord determines when we begin and end.

We can fuss, whine, and debate about how much we are required in the 'go' position when God tells us to halt. Or we can simply wait, developing more confident that He handles everything well.

The only way to prepare for the things we are not prepared for is to continue to trust God. Do you remember that important lesson?

Life's setbacks can be used by God to keep us moving. O for the calm of complete trust in You, My Loving God; unwavering faith that never questions what You have planned for my best interests.

An ungodly man digs up evil, and it is on his lips like a burning fire. — Proverbs 16:27

Arson is among the most pointless acts. Late in 1993, a wave of brushfires started by arsonists scorched parts of the Southern California terrain. Woodlands were destroyed, houses were reduced to ruins, and both people and animals perished.

Verbal arson is slander. Lies about a person's behaviour or character can be quite damaging. They eat away at relationships and ruin reputations.

A scoundrel, according to King Solomon's proverb, has iniquity "on his lips like a burning fire" (Prov. 16:27). He said, however, that kind words are calming and educational, fostering spiritual health (vv. 21–24).

When you feel tempted to use flamboyant language to damage your brother's reputation, resist the urge! Ask God to give you the wisdom to use your words to uplift rather than tear down. Stay away from verbal arson.

Words have the potential to warm or burn like fire. Be careful what you say because no one can see.

What comes out of the mouth may be harmful;

What shame, what sorrow might result

with a single careless, malicious word!

The Father . . . will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever. — John 14:16

Jesus knew His disciples well and gave them guidance and inspiration. He promised to send "another Helper" when He told them He was departing (Jn. 14:16). He was promising them that they would be helped by someone who was like Himself. Therefore, on the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended to reside within each believer and gave them the same individualised care that Jesus had given His disciples, albeit invisibly.

The Holy Spirit is a personal Being that resides within each and every disciple of Jesus Christ, not some mystical power. He is both our witnessing strength and our instructor (Jn. 14:26; 16:13).

Let's give thanks to the Lord Jesus for providing us with a personal assistant.

Because we have the Spirit within, we are never alone. All-divine Holy Spirit,
Dwell inside of my heart;
Destroy each idol throne,
Rule supremely and alone.
