And it all began when the son of one of the original owners took over a prosperous Midwestern family firm after his military service was over.
One screen in one building, in Stanley Durwood's opinion, is restrictive. More options were sought after. So he started converting a number of huge single-screen theaters in Kansas City, Missouri, into smaller structures with many auditoriums. The outcome? The world's first multiplex theater was established. The theater provided the industry with a model because of the enormous success. The American Multi-Cinema, Inc. (AMC) company was founded in 1968 after Durwood's chain of multiplex theaters had grown to include theaters across the country.
Durwood oversaw AMC for the following three decades while driving innovation with the moviegoer in mind. Stadium seating, the armchair cup holder, and the first rewards program in the business all contributed to further revolutionizing the movie business.
That innovation carried over into the twenty-first century, when AMC co-founded internet ticketing, introduced circuit-wide gift cards, formed a ground-breaking relationship with IMAX, introduced the AMC Stubs rewards program, and introduced AMC Dine-In Theatres. Through the acquisition of Loews Theatres and Kerasotes Theatres, AMC also significantly widened its geographic reach in North America.
AMC has maintained its position as the industry leader in recent years by concentrating on its customers and offering the greatest moviegoing experience possible. With support from The Wanda Group, its largest shareholder, AMC spearheaded the implementation of plush, power recliners, dramatically improved food and beverage options for patrons, including the addition of MacGuffins Bars and Coca-Cola Freestyle machines, and has improved moviegoing experiences through an expanded partnership with IMAX and the introduction of Dolby Cinema at AMC.
AMC announced the purchases of Carmike Cinemas in the United States and Odeon & UCI Cinemas in Europe in 2016. Adam Aron, who joined the firm as CEO and President in 2016, has led it to new heights. AMC will be the biggest theater chain in the world whenever one of these deals is finished.
