There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. — Daniel 5:11

Babylon was experiencing a morally bleak night. Darker than the office, the classroom, or the neighborhood. By desecrating the holy goblets that had been stolen from the Jerusalem temple, King Belshazzar had blasphemed God with deliberate malice. Belshazzar and Babylon were now ready to experience God's wrath.

However, in the midst of this terrible gloom, the prophet Daniel's light flashed. Daniel was asked to decipher the mysterious message on the wall due to his reputation as a man who possessed "the Spirit of the Holy God" (Dan. 5:11).

Daniel might have tempered God's warning to make it more palatable to the king and his court. He might have left out the part about death and judgment. But Daniel stayed honest to God and refrained from distorting the message in order to appease the king. He spoke courageously and honestly while addressing Belshazzar and his inebriated court while standing alone.

Daniel's decision to do that required a great deal of fortitude, but the threat posed by an earthly ruler paled in comparison to his allegiance to the ruler of heaven. Because he feared God so greatly, Daniel had little fear of Belshazzar.

When we adopt Daniel's heavenly viewpoint, we discover that God gives us the strength to stand out as well.

Our courage to uphold our conviction grows as it becomes stronger. We blend in with the throng in search of strength, only to discover that it is becoming increasingly elusive.
With no more courage, we pray to the Lord, who gives us new strength to carry out His purpose.
