You shall not make for yourself a carved image. — Exodus 20:4

This insightful observation explains why Moses reminded Israel at Sinai that "You saw no form when the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire" (Dt. 4:15). It also emphasises the rationale behind God's decree banning any bodily depictions of Him.

Without a thorough comprehension of the Lord's character, we cannot love and serve Him in a way that is acceptable. However, any physical representation, whether through images, icons, or statues, distorts our understanding of His genuine nature and weakens a healthy awe for His mighty holiness and might.

How much more should we who have special revelation carefully adhere to every word God has uttered if Rome's greatest atheist could comprehend the perils of misrepresenting deity, led only by the light of nature and reason?

Let's pray the Lord to help us develop a healthy regard for Him and to expand our understanding of His character.

Don't try to create God in your image; He was created in God's.

God alone is knowledgeable, immortal, invisible,

From our sight, inaccessible light was hidden.

Most majestic and beautiful Ancient of Days,

We exalt the magnificent name of the All-Powerful and Victorious.
