Al Mar, the son of Chinese immigrants, was born in the United States. He volunteered to join a Green Beret special operations unit in Vietnam while serving in a Special Forces Reserve Unit. Al finished his academic education by obtaining a master's degree in industrial design from the Art Center academic of Design in Los Angeles after serving in Vietnam.
Later, he worked for Pete Gerber at Gerber® Legendary Blades, where he finished his employment as "Head of Knife Design."
Al established AL MAR® Knives in 1979. His goal was to combine mass production techniques with the caliber of a bespoke knife. Due to his extensive Judo and Kendo training, as well as his past as a Green Beret, the majority of his early blades were created for the police and military. Al's S.E.R.E. (Survive-Escape-Resist-Evade) knife was really the first one Colonel Nick Rowe of the Special Forces approved for use at Camp McCall in North Carolina's S.E.R.E Instructor School. His designs also changed as the business expanded to include premium hunting/fishing, kitchen, and gentleman's gift knives.
Al Mar was a reserve deputy sheriff, a life member of the Special Forces Association, and a member of the Special Operations Association. Both the Fighting Knives Magazine and the Blade Magazine Hall of Fame inducted him. Al Mar was a man deserving of utmost respect.
His mission to create knives with custom-quality design and innovation is something we still pursue today.
