We are stewards rather than owners. Of certainly, we are the true owners of our possessions. But as Christians, we gleefully concur with David that "the earth is the Lord's, and all that is in it; the world, and all that dwell therein" (Ps. 24:1).
God is the rightful owner of everything that exists, including us and everything we own. He gives us permission to exploit His world's resources for a limited time. But ultimately, it all comes back to Him. Are we treating God's property with wisdom and generosity?
We only truly lose the things we make an effort to hold onto. Nothing I call mine own that I hold for the Giver; mine heart, my strength, my life—everything—is His and will always be His.
