Joshua, the leader of Israel, was instructed by God to remove 12 stones from the Jordan River's middle for a similar reason (Josh. 4:1-7,20-24). The Lord desired for there to be a memorial to their national history for future generations. He wanted them to keep in mind that just as He had split the Red Sea to free them from Egypt, He had also done the same to cross the Jordan to the Promised Land. In addition to living in the present, he encouraged people to keep in mind the principles, beliefs, and wisdom of their founding fathers, Moses, Aaron, and Joshua.
God comprehends the human condition and is aware of how frequently in our spiritual lives "out-of-sight, out-of-mind" occurs. Spiritual principles require tangible reminders in our lives.
Because neither we nor our children can afford to forget the marvel of God's provisions, we need to build stone piles, keep notebooks, and share family tales to help us remember them.
