The prophets . . . walked after things that do not profit. — Jeremiah 2:8

Following foreign gods, the Israelites and their leaders also pursued what they believed would be lucrative for them (Jer. 2:5). But according to verse 8, the Lord told them they were pursuing "things that do not profit," and verse 19 said their own guilt was damning them. When God intervened, they were more falsely accused of their own deeds than of God. They were unable to avoid the Lord's sight or mislead His sense of fairness.

In actuality, each of us is guilty before the Lord and in need of His pardon. But before it's too late, we can discover the mercy that no human court could provide because He loved us enough to send His Son to die in our place.

According to Romans 6:23, eternal life is God's gift, while death is the price of sin. Jesus is prepared to erase your guilt, weighted with shame and disgrace. He gladly endured suffering and death in your stead; why not accept His pardon and grace?
