Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! —Psalm 34:9Perfect love casts out fear. — 1 John 4:18

I was terrified in the way that we ought to be afraid of God. This is the level of terror that is recommended by Psalm 34:9 and numerous other verses in the Bible. Our deep affection for the Lord and our gratitude for His love for us compel us to be afraid of disappointing Him.

An infantile dread is the fear of being punished. This is the fear that the "perfect love" in 1 John 4:18 casts out. Even still, this particular phobia isn't all that horrible. It frequently plays a role in leading someone to accept Christ, and it may also prevent a Christian from committing significant sin.

But as our faith deepens, we shall obey God out of a deep love for Him and a desire to avoid disappointing Him. Our main goal will be to please Him.

Lord, create in us a deep understanding of Your love and a heartfelt desire to please You. Deliver us from an immature dread of retribution.

To please God is the most important reason to obey Him. O may our love deepen as we draw nearer to God, making us fear His wrath more than we fear His rod.
