Paul, the apostle, wrote on this subject of self-discipline in today's Scripture reading. He made comparisons to athletic competition and argued that we should approach our spiritual development with the same zeal that athletes do when they are vying for a reward. When you consider the arduous training and self-discipline a world-class athlete goes through to qualify for the Olympics, that is a tall request.
According to Paul, "I discipline my body" (1 Cor. 9:27). According to scholar Henry Alford, the Greek word for discipline implies "to strike heavily in the face, to render black and blue." Although the apostle was using metaphor, his point was still very obvious.
We must train ourselves to read the Bible, pray, love selflessly, freely pardon, and reject every wicked idea and tendency if we wish to triumph in our spiritual marathon.
Lord, please enable me to always do what is right and to abstain from sin so that I will never be unable to serve you.
The result of commitment and discipline is victory. Christian, you must submit your mind and body to God's discipline in order to overcome every sin.
