Cleanse me from my sin. . . . Then I will teach transgressors Your ways. — Psalm 51:2,13

Christians would be more successful in winning unbelievers to Christ if they were more forthright about their own wickedness.

We who frequently attend church have a tendency to smile or appear devout on Sunday morning. This might suggest that we never encounter temptation or fall short of the ideal we preach. It makes sense that many homeless or impoverished persons who frequent churches feel like they are the only terrible people there.

This is not meant to imply that we should publicly confess all of our bad thoughts and deeds. Instead, the way to resolve this issue is to be completely honest with ourselves, as David did in Psalm 51. We won't come off as superior if we are honest with ourselves about our own propensity toward sin and capacity for evil. Because of this, God will be able to use us to "teach transgressors [His] ways" (Ps. 51:13) to the most egregious sinners.

Knowing that we have the capacity for sin within us makes us more compassionate toward others who are guilty of sin.

Lord Jesus, please enable us to be open and honest about our need for Your grace and our sin. Give us the character to attract others to You.
