If we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. — 1 Corinthians 11:31

In 1 Corinthians 11, the apostle Paul encouraged self-evaluation. He advised Christians to evaluate their own worth in order to avoid being deemed unfit by the Lord for His ministry. The "appearance problem" was extremely severe in the Corinthian church. Those believers "looked" terrible. They were pretending to celebrate the Lord's Supper, but they were actually getting drunk and fighting among themselves.

Paul effectively reacted by saying, "Look at yourselves. What a disaster! If you don't straighten out your life, the Lord will have to do it. The apostle then shared the depressing information that God had already started purging the church by causing some of them to pass away at a young age. Although it is a difficult reality, the church still needs to hear it today.

But this warning also conveys a message of optimism. We won't be judged by God if we evaluate ourselves honestly and turn from our sins.

No Christian is exempt from the challenge of self-examination.O Lord, bring back to me Your power, which I once knew through grace; pardon the sin that pained Your heart; and assist me in being honest.
