Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus . . . to be crucified. — Mark 15:15

Similar actions were taken by Pilate toward Jesus. Even though he was aware that Christ was innocent of the accusations made against him, he gave in to the crowd's pressure. As a result, his name will live in infamy.

Few of us are elected or appointed officials who must win over the majority in order to maintain their positions. However, we experience the same kind of pressure. One day, a Christian college student informed me, he was transporting three friends home from a football game.

He refused to stop at a bar where there were known to be lewd acts. The three students were well-liked in college and came from respectable households. He felt enormous pressure to violate his moral principles because he wanted to please them. He hesitated for a brief minute, but with the Lord's assistance he was able to resist the urge and instead chose to drive to a family restaurant.

Lord, assist us to avoid peer pressure that would tempt us to sin when it arises.

We will give in to the forces surrounding us if we don't rely on the power of God within us.
If we want to do what is right and good, we must be true to ourselves; if we give in to what is wrong, we lose awareness of sin.
