According to Ezekiel 33, the ancient Israelites utilized the prophecies to comfort them rather than to alter the course of their lives. To bolster their conviction, they quoted passages out of context (v. 24). Although they enjoyed hearing the prophet's words (v. 30), the Lord said, "They hear your words, but they do not do them" (v. 31). The outcome? They experienced divine wrath.
God's Word is not to be treasured as a lucky charm or to calm the mind by providing momentary reprieve from distress, then or now. It was intended to be followed in order to receive assistance that would last longer than just this life.
