We must be prepared to defy social norms in order to obey our Master. Our motivations, values, and behaviors are certain to differ from those of non-Christians as we follow Jesus. That's how it was in the first century when the Christians' way of living perplexed and persuaded the pagans. The phrase "they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you" may be found in 1 Peter 4:4.
We will inevitably be out of step with those around us when we are marching to a different drummer. This requires commitment, bravery, and decency. But with God's enabling grace, we are able to be both strangely and actually different.
We will not be in step with the world when we walk with the Lord. Some will despise you while others will adore you; some will flatter while others will slight;
Give up on men, lift your gaze to the sky, put your trust in God, and act morally.
