Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, . . . but the sorrow of the world produces death. — 2 Corinthians 7:10

Describe repentance. And how can we tell whether something is real?

According to Paul, godly sorrow for sin results in salvation and a new life, whereas worldly sorrow, which is limited to feeling horrible about the effects of sin, leaves a person unchanged and results in death. True repentance does not entail a life without sin. However, our repentance is sincere if we acknowledge that we are powerless sinners, believe that Jesus died for our sins, are relying on Him for salvation, and have a strong desire to live for Him. We've been pardoned.

Repentance conveys both a "I'm sorry" and a "I'm done" message. True repentance drives away the sin we once loved, vowing steadfastly to turn away from it and never longer submit to it.
