Those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the Word. — Acts 8:4

The mission that Jesus gave His followers immediately before He left them is summarized in this statement. Acts 1:8 says He declared they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the globe. He also promised them power from the Holy Spirit. That's what occurred when the Jerusalem church in the first century was persecuted. They were dispersed and carried the gospel with them (8:4).

The structure remains after followers of Jesus Christ leave a worship service, but God's people—the church—fan out into the neighborhood. They continue to be the church all week long no matter where they are in the world—at stores, colleges, eateries, and homes. Is the gospel being spread by the church to the world?

The church must travel to the world because the world won't travel to the church. All who require the second birth and the strength to live righteously must see the church's witness in the world with the greatest light.
