 Our giving to the Lord should include more than handing Him a “tip” on Sunday from money that’s left over when the bills are paid. It should include all acts of devotion that cost us something.

In today’s Bible reading, God’s people had failed to learn this lesson. They didn’t offer Him “sweet cane” (Isa. 43:24)—a gift that would have required self-sacrifice.

According to Jeremiah, this expensive delicacy came from “a far country” (Jer. 6:20). It was one of the ingredients God instructed Moses to use in the formula for the holy anointing oil (Ex. 30:23), and it was used in the sanctuary to produce a sweet-smelling sacrifice. An Israelite who brought sweet cane was expressing a sacrificial kind of giving that pleased God. 

Ask yourself the following searching question: Is my life characterized by acts of self-denial, the gifts of sweet cane that mean so much to the Lord? How grieved the Savior must be when we don’t offer Him worship and gifts that come from our heart! 

Don’t be satisfied to get by with a minimum of giving and service. Offer the Lord the sweet cane of a zealous, sacrificial life. 

Self-sacrifice is the true measure of our giving.

 As narcissistic as that title may sound, it might help us understand how we, as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, should regard ourselves as we strive to imitate Him throughout our lives. According to the Bible, we must keep improving each day if we want to resemble Christ more and more. 

We refer to the process of becoming more like Christ as sanctification. When we place our trust in Christ to atone for our sins, it starts. We are "set apart" from the ungodly in God's eyes, or sanctified, and included in His family. But sanctification is also the continuing process through which, as we allow the Holy Spirit to imbue us with His attributes, we begin to resemble our Saviour more and more. 

Our responsibility is to "press on," making an effort to develop spiritually (Phil. 3:12). 

Do you think your spiritual appearance has improved since yesterday? It's a wonderful litmus test for how closely you are following Jesus. 

The development of a saint takes a lifetime; the new birth just lasts a moment. My will gradually gives way as I become more and more like my Saviour, until at last Christ rules supreme in my grateful heart.

Making excuses, defending our wrong behaviour, blaming others, or ignoring God simply serves to compound the original sin.

The Holy Spirit may have shown up a sin in your life to you as you were reading this. If so, you have a decision to make: admit your sin and turn to God (1 John 1:9), or keep denying that you have a problem with it.

Don't add more sin to your previous transgression. Take it right away in fervent confession to the Lord. What you do next is what matters most!
