God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. — Genesis 41:52

In today's Bible reading, we learn that Joseph was in a position of authority, which God soon utilized to provide for his family, the neighboring nations, and the world during a time of famine. But how did he come to be so well-known? Being sold into slavery (Gen. 39) was the initial wound that led to the creation of a pearl of great value. When Joseph was humiliated, he drew on God's resources, which caused him to improve rather than go worse. He remarked, "God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction" (41:52) and gave his second son the name Ephraim, which means "twice fruitful".

Adversity frequently disguises itself as a blessing. If we embrace hardship and put up with every discomfort, we will eventually learn what we need to know.

Our sorrow will result in gain.
