[Pray] for all men, for kings and all who are in authority. — 1 Timothy 2:1-2

A convention to update the Articles of Confederation was called in the United States in 1787. Delegates studied ancient history and contemporary governments for weeks in an effort to gain insights. However, nothing fitted the young country.

Mr. Franklin held a belief in a powerful, all-knowing God who could offer direction to those who prayed for it.

If there was ever a time to emulate that sincere example of prayer, it is right now. Governments are ordained by God, according to Paul (Romans 13:1), and we should pray for those who are in positions of responsibility over us (1 Timothy 2:1–2). This tenet of prayer also pertains to how our leaders are chosen. We need to educate ourselves on those who create our laws and cast prayerful ballots.

We can—indeed, we must—unabashedly and proudly mix prayer with our politics because God has commanded us to do so.

Men who are good Christians also make good citizens.   We put our reliance in God to protect us from danger. Human efforts will fall short for us like broken reeds, and only God is able to protect us from damage.
