You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold . . . but with the precious blood of Christ. — 1 Peter 1:18-19

Call toll-free and "Jesus can be yours." It states this in the marketing for a 2-foot-tall, machine-washable "Jesus doll." The doll is dressed in a white tunic with a crimson heart embroidered on it underneath a scarlet cloak.

According to the advertisement, children will adore hugging the doll, while the elderly and anyone who are experiencing emotional turmoil will find solace in it. Therefore, "Jesus can be yours" for just $29.95.

Do you desire one? Do you also believe that breaking the Second Commandment, which forbids the creation of any idols, would be a breach of this? (Ex. 20:4-5). It is unquestionably impossible to buy the world's Redeemer and the comfort He provides for 5 cents less than $30!

This, in my opinion, runs counter to the gospel's message.

The statement "Jesus can be yours" is true. But you cannot purchase Him. He actually paid for us! Jesus does not become ours by the payment of "corruptible things, like silver or gold" (1 Peter 1:18), but rather through our simple faith in the mercy and grace He extends to us through the shed blood of His Son (v.19). He satisfied the price of sin with His blood. And we have access to all of heaven's riches because of our faith in Him.

Jesus is beyond purchase. But you can have Him for nothing.

Salvation is offered without charge. The route to paradise could not be purchased with silver or gold; the blood of the cross is my only foundation, and it is through the death of my Saviour that redemption was accomplished.
