Paul wrote to Timothy, "Bring the books, especially the parchments," while he was in jail awaiting execution (2 Timothy 4:13). He was aware of how critical it was to constantly be thinking about God's truth. That is something that we must all do on a daily basis.
Paul was confident, but not in his writings. It was in God, who, according to verse 18, would tenderly tend to him and keep him for His heavenly kingdom. Even those of us who can no longer read or remember can agree with that.
Though memory may fade, God's promises never do. Even when my body and soul have separated, I will cling to God's unchanging Word because even though everything else will perish, His Word will endure forever.
