Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness. — Isaiah 5:20

Israel had scorned and disregarded God's directives in Isaiah's day (Is. 5:24). They badly undervalued the importance of following His instructions and having confidence in Him. (Vv. 18–19) They diminished the value of patiently waiting for the Lord to carry out His plans. They overvalued evil and undervalued virtue (v. 20). They overvalued their own knowledge and cunning (v. 21), and they elevated heavy drinkers to heroic status (v. 22). Justice was often obstructed by bribery (v. 23). God had established conditions for virtue to develop (vv. 1–2), but His people had grown moral weeds instead.

Is this sounding modern? Our culture is imitating what ancient Israel did. How difficult for the church! May those of us who accept Christ as our Savior demonstrate to the world the true worth of kindness, righteousness, justice, sobriety, wisdom, and purity via the way we live.

Being a follower of Christ is the best defense against evil. This war-torn world, which is so plagued by sin and in such great need, must witness personally the love of Christ from Christians who will take the lead.
