Husbands, love your wives . . . . Let the wife see that she respects her husband. — Ephesians 5:25,33

Healthy unions are balanced. The excitement and spontaneity of continuing to fall in love with each other enrich the practical realities of everyday life.

A spouse who is realistic may be able to recognize that he is being insensitive to his wife's feelings and is taking her for granted. It may make a wife realize how damaging her criticisms are to her husband's self-respect.

But realism is insufficient. Romance, which is frequently abandoned after the wedding, prevents a marriage from getting boring. It can avert the kind of scenario shown in the cartoon with the elderly couple sitting on their front porch.

The husband is addressing Sarah and stating, "Sometimes, Sarah, when I think of how much you mean to me, I can hardly keep from telling you so."

In Ephesians 5, Paul exhorts readers to love one another in a way that emulates Christ's selfless dedication to His church. It's also a loving relationship that is kind and gentle.

Christ can assist you in finding a healthy balance between romanticism and realism in your relationship, whether you're just starting off dating or have been wed for a year or fifty. Continue to rely on His love and watch what it may accomplish for your marriage.

Marriage bonds have little value unless the interest is maintained. Despite the shortcomings of the couples, a marriage can still succeed; nevertheless, both parties must turn to God for support in order to maintain their love.
