Every Sunday, millions of Christians assemble to worship God as their Creator and Saviour. Church services are chances to proclaim God's deservingness and to give Him thanks, whether they are conventional and liturgical or unstructured and impromptu. But the long history of the church shows how easily worship may turn into meaningless routine. Every time God's people become heartless and disobey His Word, something happens.
This was confirmed to be true by Israel, according to the psalmist. They had been miraculously freed from servitude in Egypt under the direction of Moses, and they had zealously praised the Lord (Ex. 12–15). They soon started to question God's goodness and reliability, though. They were vehemently critical of the Lord and His representative Moses.
They disobeyed Him, and their worship became futile. They spent 40 years travelling in a desert they could have crossed quickly because of this, which infuriated God. And only few of them were given permission to get into the Promised Land!
Lord, make us wonder and be thankful for Your wonderful salvation. Allow us to be faithful in our love and allegiance to You so that we may offer You the honour You so richly deserve.
Only when we are in harmony with God is our worship acceptable. You who know the Saviour, praise Him!
Who is to know the amount we owe Him?
Let us gladly give Him everything we are and possess.
