Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! — Matthew 21:9

One could have anticipated seeing Jesus the King ride into Jerusalem on a powerful stallion on that first Palm Sunday. But He went with a humble donkey instead. He had to first come as a Savior to die before He could come as a King to rule. Jesus displayed stark contrasts throughout His whole existence on earth, demonstrating both His true humanity and His complete deity.

Christ nourished the needy as God despite his human hunger. He was exhausted, yet He is our comfort. Despite having paid tribute, He is the King. He was referred to as the devil, yet He drove out demons. He prayed, but He still answers prayers. He sobbed, and He wipes away our tears. He redeems sinners after having been sold for 30 pieces of silver. He is the Good Shepherd even though He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. By giving His life, He also defeated death.

Such contradictions would be expected in the life of someone who was both wholly God and totally human. In order to provide for our redemption, Jesus, the omnipotent Lord of the universe, took on human form. But He will come back in the future as King of Kings.

The God-man, Jesus, deserves our admiration.
