Bring the cloak . . . and the books, especially the parchments. — 2 Timothy 4:13

In a Roman jail, the apostle Paul sat by himself as he considered his last few weeks on earth. He must have felt his bones penetrate when he penned a letter to his buddy Timothy (4:21), pleading with him to visit before winter. He instructed Timothy to bring the scrolls, especially the parchments, and to bring a cloak to protect him from the biting chill.

The animal skin-covered parchments might have contained copies of passages from the Old Testament. The "books," which were actually scrolls composed of papyrus. It is obvious that Paul had no intention of writing another dense theological tract like the book of Romans. He also had no plans to write any more sermons. He required such books to keep his spirit warm and his mind sharp.

We must develop good reading habits. The first is, of course, the Bible. However, God also employs dependable book companions to uplift our spirits and engage our minds. Like a good friend, a good book is always there for you when you need it.
We have read words of eternal truth that will inspire us to succeed in life's race since they are so beautifully written and full of grace.
