“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said, “Barabbas!” — Matthew 27:21

They wanted someone released, and the throng had assembled. In Jesus' day, it was usual to release a prisoner on Passover to honor the Jews' freedom from slavery in Egypt.

Pilate was an experienced politician. As a result, he offered the mob a choice between the One who had raised Lazarus from the dead and the One whose sword had likely already taken many lives. The decision appeared simple. But the murderer Barabbas was the choice of the populace.

Mob governance always favors the irrational, rebellious, and wild. It picks the world's jackals, the Barabbases, Stalins, and Hitlers. It disapproves of the weak, the modest, the servants, and the lambs.

What if we were present? Who would we have opted for? We like to think that we would have gone with Jesus. Would we, though? The crowd's shouting is really loud. "Hosanna to the Son of David!" the throng had yelled a few days before to the trial. People were now yelling, "Crucify Him!" We can become lost, scared, and confused under the weight of the crowd.

God, aide us. Despite everything we know, we can still be tempted to pick the jackal when we're in a throng. Aid us in selecting the Lamb.

Count on the strength of the Lord to withstand the demands of the world. The world will try to force us to conform into its mold, but if we cling to God's truth, we can withstand it with His assistance.
