Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. — John 9:3

We find it disturbing that some people are born with significant disabilities. We have a strong sense of compassion for them and naturally question why they must go through this kind of suffering.

Such handicaps, according to those who believe in reincarnation, are consequences for actions taken in former lives. But the Bible's teaching is utterly at odds with this idea.

When someone has a disability, we need to be cautious about assigning responsibility. When Jesus came across the man who was born blind. "Who sinned, this man or his parents?" His disciples questioned. (Jn. 9:2). But when asked, Jesus said, "Neither," adding, "but that the works of God should be revealed in him" (v. 3). He then provided the man with healing as best He could.

While we can't heal people like Jesus did, we may improve their quality of life by being kind to others. There are many chances to show love by lending a hand or a sympathetic ear, not in a patronizing way but in true friendship. We demonstrate the spirit of Christ when we treat people with respect.

Lord, please assist us to recognize and uphold each person's dignity. When there is no apparent cause for unpleasant events, please help us to concentrate on what we can do.
