A fake teacher, like that unnamed thief, is aware of what people want and appeals to those needs (2 Peter). He doesn't have a lapel badge to alert people to his lies; instead, he seems as an agent of the truth. He promises to improve people's lives, but those who believe him frequently discover after paying a heavy price that he is a liar.
But Jesus is a teacher we can entirely rely on. He truly loves us, therefore He gives us the gift of eternal life. The first step in defending ourselves against the misleading gifts that false teachers provide is to accept His gift of salvation.
But erroneous teaching has the power to mislead even believers. God's Word urges us to study the Scriptures (1 Peter 2:2), evaluate what we hear (1 John 4:1), and deepen our faith (2 Peter 1:5–9) in light of this. So we won't be surprised to find our spiritual life in chaos.
Some gifts have hidden costs; not all gifts are free. The cautious lambs that graze close to their shepherd's attentive gaze are wise since vicious wolves who are driven by greed seek out unsophisticated sheep to munch on.
