Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. — 2 Corinthians 9:7

It goes without saying that you haven't contributed all you ought to if it hurts for you to give to Him who gave His all for you. God asks you to give more for your own benefit than for His. God doesn't require your gifts, after all. Since "it is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35), he encourages you to donate for your personal gain.

As Paul stated in Acts 17:24–25, "God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands," our Lord most definitely does not require our gifts.

Furthermore, as He gives everything life and breath, He is not worshipped with human hands, as if He were in need of anything.

Therefore, He desires that we all experience the satisfaction of giving for our own gain. Does that joy come to you?

Give until it feels wonderful, as opposed to giving until it hurts. Whatever the gift, we offer Thee only Thine; all that we own is A trust, O Lord, from Thee.
