Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. — Luke 2:10

The angel who told the shepherds that Jesus was born declared that he had come to bring them "good tidings of great joy" (Lk. 2:10). Today, a lot of people hear the phrases "great joy" but don't really comprehend them. As they deck out their houses, shop at cheery shops, attend festive gatherings, and exchange gifts with their loved ones, they enjoy the holiday season. But after the first thrill wears off, they are left feeling drained and joyless.

Others absolutely detest the current season. Many people lack the resources to buy presents or decorate. Some people don't have any buddies to celebrate with. In fact, the joyous environment surrounding them makes them feel more depressed.

Both groups have the issue of identifying the "great joy" of which the angel spoke in the wrong way. It is not located in the frivolous fun, but rather in the deeper significance of the season. God took on human form when Jesus was born in order to forgive us of our sins and give us the hope of an eternal life in heaven. The actual cause of happiness is that. The shepherds returned to their work amid the chilly evenings and solitude, yet they were still "glorifying and praising God" (v. 20).

Indeed, "good tidings of great joy... to all people" (v.10) is what Christmas is truly about.

Jesus makes Christmas joyful. The triumph of the sky is yours to join when you joyfully announce, with the celestial hosts, "Christ is born in Bethlehem."
