 Christmas is that time of year when the not-so-jolly sounds of attorneys debating whether nativity scenes violate someone's civil rights or whether Christmas carols can be played at a school concert once again fill the courtrooms. 

If we aren't careful, the constant legal disputes that seem to surround Christmas each year may lessen our ability to fully appreciate this most joyous of holidays. 

But it would be simpler for us to grasp the challenges this season brings if we remember that Jesus Himself warned us that His advent would not always usher in peace and good times.

One day Jesus gave His followers their commands and warned them to be on the lookout for disaster. He predicted that they would face family disputes, hatred, and persecution (Mt. 10:21–23). He really admonished His followers, saying, "Do not believe that I come to create peace on earth. In contrast to tranquilly, I came bearing a sword (v. 34). 

Although it appears strange for the Prince of Peace to be sending such a message, it is real. Jesus brings happiness, joy, and serenity to everyone who trusts Him. However, the celebration of His advent will lead to arguments for those who reject His salvation—even at Christmas.

 Christ offers peace in a violent world. Despite the fact that there is conflict in the world right now, we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace at Christmas.
