 I find it distressing that so many sermons and books nowadays are solely devoted to methods for assisting people in successfully navigating the difficulties, issues, and struggles of life. Preaching on common topics and "how-to" publications have their place, of course. People cannot help themselves in laying a strong spiritual basis for their life, however, if the major biblical truths about God, His power, His sovereignty, His grace, and His salvation through Christ are not taught to them. 

We have a solid foundation for living a holy life when we acknowledge the truth of these profound spiritual truths. 

Knowing and comprehending the Lord, whom Isaiah referred to as "the High and Lofty One" (57:15), gives us a sense of stability in life that is necessary for overcoming whatever challenge we may face.

What, however, is frequently advised first when a marriage is disintegrating? Consult a marriage therapist. Join a group treatment session. Read a well-known book about marriage success. These strategies have some value, but the best way to solve any issue is to first check our relationship with God and then ask Him for insight.

Help us, Lord, to approach problem-solving by turning first to You and Your Word.

 

There are many books that can educate, but only the Bible can change. The wonderful words of Jesus uttered, holding up faith's lamp to indicate my Savior's proximity, are what I need to hear when my heart is wounded, when sin and sadness have filled my spirit with terror. Give me the Bible at those times.
