As believers, one temptation we have is the desire to conform our beliefs to the culture around us in order to avoid appearing to be out of touch with it. But when we succumb to this urge, we find that we are compromising what we believe to be right. We come up with excuses for morally repugnant behaviour that society accepts. Even though we claim to still believe in the Bible, we often distort its straightforward moral and spiritual teachings in an effort to make it say what we want it to.
How the Israelites allowed their wicked impulses to cloud their spiritual perspective is described in Exodus 32. They created an idol and had a sexual worship session because they wanted to imitate their pagans neighbours. Moses and the Lord were both enraged by this, which led to harsh punishment.
The Bible warns us that if we don't take it seriously, we will lose sight of God's commands and do things that are wrong.
allow the world mould you, but don't allow it. I cannot please the ungodly with my actions and still get the benefits of His Word. If I wanted to win the praise of the world, I would have to lose the presence of my Lord.
