According to witnesses, the backhoe operator was killed when a brick wall collapsed on him as he sought shelter from a gust of wind.
This may be the kind of unforeseen bad luck that led Solomon to question the meaninglessness of life (Eccl. 9:2). He was aware that uncertainty is a constant in life (v. 12), and that safety often seems elusive. He had learned that the fear of losing something quickly overtakes the desire to own it. He came to the conclusion that if we're wise, we'll live in the present.
Solomon's predicament was not ultimately resolved by momentary living, though. He eventually understood that there is only one firm basis for coping with uncertainty. He came to the conclusion, "Fear God and keep His commandments" (12:13), after examining his own crimes and diversion. Realising that whatever we do or think now will have eternal value or loss is the only prudent way to live for the time being (v. 14).
God's judgement, however unpredictable in this life, is certain. Live for the moment, but keep eternity in mind at all times. In this manner, your actions will reflect the Lord's honour.
Seize the present as eternity! What emerges from man will not last—it is only here today and gone tomorrow; but what comes from God will never change throughout all of time!
