God invites us to approach Him in our current state, acknowledging that we are sinners deserving of only judgement. This may be humiliating, but it is the only way for us to be accepted and used by God and receive the atonement Christ purchased with His life on the cross.
The Pharisees and scribes were meticulous upholders of the law. They believed that because they had all been "cleaned up," God was happy with them. They were upset when they observed Jesus dining with those who had a poor reputation. Though, according to Jesus, "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance" (Lk. 5:32). This was a rebuke to their arrogant mindset. They had to own up to their sin. Jesus may then accept them as well.
Repent and come to Jesus in your current state if you need to be saved or have your fellowship restored! Your guilt will be absolved, and He will make you righteous.
