The Jews who returned from exile to repopulate Jerusalem and Israel also had little knowledge of their religion. The people, however, listened intently for hours while Ezra read from the Book of the Law and the Levites discussed the text. A strong conviction of sin was brought on by the Word of God. The Israelites started to cry. But they were warned not to cry. They were to feast on this day "because they understood the words that were declared to them" (Neh. 8:12).
A nebulous faith will never make us happy. God's truth must be clearly heard by us in order for it to affect our hearts. The Lord's delight will be ours as we understand and abide in His Word (v. 10).
The road to joy is obedience. No memory of the truth of God exists.
