Put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord God. — Joshua 24:23

 Call it the Shechem Showdown. For the challenge of their lives, Joshua gathered the people of Israel at this place.

Joshua started off by giving a dramatic account of their ancestors' past in order to pique their interest. He explained how God had brought them safely to Jericho from Terah's hometown.

The people must have been reliving in their minds the thrilling tales their grandparents had told them about the plagues in Egypt, the crossing of the Red Sea, and all the battles with the surrounding foes while Joshua spoke.

The realisation that, in spite of God's goodness, the people were still worshipping the pagan gods of their ancestors must have been more humiliating than all those instances of God's assistance.

Joshua did not refer to the past when he challenged the Israelites. It dealt with the future. He exhorted them to serve the only real God. The Lord will not put up with other people's worship because "He is a jealous God" (Josh. 24:19).

We have witnessed God at action, both miraculously in giving us eternal life and more consistently in providing for us on a daily basis. Therefore, in appreciation for the Lord, let's put our "false gods"—anything that threatens our devotion to Him—aside and turn our hearts towards the one and only God.

Your heart cannot feel at home with a foreign god. O Lord, guide us in understanding

you alone are in charge;

Please accept our worship as well.

high importance.
