Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. — Psalm 119:97

Many Christians read the Bible in a way similar to that of the jacana bird. They jump around the top, catching sight of a few beloved verses that are lovely and consoling. But they miss out on understanding the deeper realities of God's Word that can make their lives more stable. They seldom ever devote any time to Bible study.

The psalmist spent the entire day reflecting on God's Word and grew greatly in knowledge and insight (119:97–104). We would be prudent to imitate him as believers. We shall increase in our understanding of God's truth as a result of diligently searching the Scriptures (Acts 17:11), enabling us to discern the Lord's will for our lives and service.

Don't just skim the tops of a few noteworthy texts. Be careful not to "lily-trotter." Instead, elevate your spiritual understanding to new levels.

Bible study is "hit or miss," and you miss more often than you hit. To obtain new strength and light, we must examine the Scriptures, for it is in them that we will discover the correct application of God's teachings to direct our steps.
