He who . . . has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. — 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

 Almost all religions and races participate in the anointing rite. Although applying oil may occasionally be done for medicinal purposes, it is frequently believed to endow a person with particular desired attributes or powers. For instance, some people in East Africa apply lion oil to themselves in an effort to find courage and fortitude for a difficult undertaking. 

The anointing described in the Bible—which is not done with lion's oil—allows a person to adopt the traits of another. Instead, it is the arrival of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:21-22). 

God Himself bestows this heavenly anointing on everyone who has the amazing honor of being one of His offspring.

It follows people who put their faith in Christ in their conversion. Every believer is endowed with the Spirit, according to Paul, and His presence ensures that we will one day be glorified in paradise (v. 22). We have the capacity to resemble Christ more as a result of His indwelling presence (3:17–18).

As children of God, we have no justification for continuing to be who we are. By submitting to God's anointing—the Holy Spirit who resides in our hearts—we might become more and more like Christ. 

To make us more like His Son, the Father gave us the Spirit. Father, thank You for Your Spirit. Fill us with His strength and love. Day by day and hour by hour, conform us to the image of Christ.
