Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness. — Psalm 107:8

Ruth's declaration of love to Naomi is among the most romantic in all of literature. Ruth promised to travel back to Israel with her, saying, "Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God; wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you lodge, I will lodge. I shall pass away where you pass away, and I will be buried there (Ruth 1:16–17).

Consider, though, that Naomi had told herself, "Ruth's simply a gold digger. She really wants to enter Israel so she can wed a wealthy Hebrew. I only have her passport.

Naomi would have missed out on blessings she could never have dreamed if she had suspected Ruth's motives and rejected her generosity.

But when we doubt God's goodness, we act exactly like that. We stop trusting that He will act in our best interests. And according to a proverb, if the well is infected, all the water is tainted.

"Do not be deceived," warns James 1:16-17, "for every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father." Some of God's best gifts—like the hardships that push us to grow—will appear to be negative ones once we begin to question His benevolence.

Don't question God's goodness and squander the abundance of blessings He has planned for you.

When we don't think favorably of God's goodness, we pollute the well. Drink deeply of God's goodness and faithfulness, leaving no place for uncertainty or fear; His word is the pure, true, cooling, and clear Water of Life.
