Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. — Romans 6:11

Many things about Adam and Eve that are not true about us were true when they first encountered temptation. They were surrounded by a pristine environment and a pure society. They could not be faulted for making a bad decision because of any family influences.

In the early hours of creation, Adam and Eve were magnificent beings. No corrupt past or devasted surroundings could be held responsible for their demise.

Adam and Eve were also prohibited from committing a number of sins. They were unable to have an affair.

They were unable to commit theft. They were unable to defame their parents. They were unable to testify falsely against their neighbor. They were not allowed to envy their neighbor's possessions.

But rebellion against God was at the heart of sin from the beginning of creation until the present day. When they were tempted at the one important time, Adam and Eve disregarded what God had said.

We too must choose whether to trust the Lord and follow His instructions in the midst of the temptations we currently face.

We must understand that sin has the power to destroy our relationship with Him. When we fail, we will also require His mercy.

Lord, please enable us to avoid sin and remain near to You.

Stand with Christ to fight temptation. Tell Jesus to come close when powerful temptations approach; your faith in Him will ensure that He hears you, and He will.
