Man has desired flight since the dawn of civilization. In 1783, the year the hot-air balloon was created, he took his first flight.
The airplane was made possible by the development of aerodynamic theory and the introduction of the gasoline engine. Pioneer flights were conducted in simple wooden and canvas aircraft. These were replaced by stronger and stronger aircraft. The SST and the 777 are now available. 7 million pounds of thrust are also used to launch the space shuttle into orbit.
The ancient Hebrews were unaware of the workings of flight, but they were acutely aware of the overwhelming force of God.
Their miraculous escape from Egyptian slavery, God's sustenance and leadership as they traveled across the desert, and His protection when they engaged in battle for the Promised Land were all examples of this.
In an effort to convey his power, David said that the Lord "rides on the heaven of heavens" (Psalm 68:33). He also understood that God is the one who "gives strength and power to His people" (v. 35).
I am reminded of God's colossal power by the roaring engines that cause the ground to quake during takeoff. Praise our God, whose "strength is in the clouds" (v. 34), the next time you see a jet fly across the sky.
The same God who holds the cosmos also holds you. The vast thunderclouds that form His chariots of fury, and the dark road He travels on the wings of the storm, are all evidence of His might and grace. His robe is the light, and His canopy is the sky.
