Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips. — Psalm 141:3

It's also wise advice for us to be succinct and to express something valuable when we speak to others on a daily basis. If we are being completely honest with ourselves, we must acknowledge that most of our communication is just meaningless chitchat. The Lord Jesus issued this admonition: "For every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment" (Mt. 12:36).

Take a moment to consider the nature of your typical conversations. What is the main topic of your conversations? Do you talk too much and deny others the chance to speak? Is your speech useful to other people? Do your words, most importantly, honor God?

The Lord can give you the ability to use your words to uplift people rather than just fill the air. Make David's admonition to "set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips" (Ps. 141:3) your daily prayer.

Keep in mind to switch off the sound if your mind wanders. How simple it is to use a lot of words while paying little attention to what you say!

Therefore, give your lips to the Lord gladly so that they may bless hearts every day.
