As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. — Joshua 1:5

There appeared to be a serious problem for the children of Israel. Their commander, Moses, had just passed away. How would they react? Who would be in charge? Are they now doomed to die in the wilderness?

Obviously not! Although Moses had passed away, God was undoubtedly still alive. Joshua, the group's new commander, received the following directive from him: "Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people" (Josh. 1:2). Then Joshua heard these encouraging words from the Lord: "As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I won't abandon you or go away. Be courageous and strong (vv. 5–6).

Moses had passed away, yet God was still with us. And He would continue to have plans for the people of Israel.

What solace that is for us right now! God is still alive despite challenging crises, heroic failures, the loss of priceless loved ones, and the failure of all human assistance and consolation. He is always by our side.

Are you lonely, dejected, and hopeless because of the worries of life? Keep in mind that we put our faith in a living God. He is with us just as He was with Moses, Joshua, and the children of Israel. Today, go to Him for direction and feel His enduring serenity.

We discover that God is sufficient when all that is left is God. We can find solace in our fear since our kind God is always close by and will never leave our side.
